[sg_popup id=1] Helpful TipsA common question asked is how often should you reseal your driveway to keep it looking its best?

It really depends on the climate you live in and what it is regularly exposed to, whether from weather or vehicle traffic. As a rule of thumb it is advisable to reseal a concrete driveway once every two years. Cleaning a driveway on occasion is also a practical precaution to take for preservation. Of course, if the driveway is showing signs of wear and tear this is also a popular occasion for resealing. If you aren’t sure if your driveway is in need of resealing you could ask a contractor for a recommendation.

It’s Advisable to Remove and Clean any Oil, Gasoline, and Grease. If these discoloring agents are left on a driveway too long and you want to remove any discoloring that might have occurred, there are cleaning chemicals available that will enable you to do that. It is advisable to clean up as much of the oil as possible with a rag or cloth. Kitty litter can be used and left on the oil stain then swept up. You can do this more than once for more of the stain to be absorbed. A midly acidic liquid then can be poured on the oil and then you can clean the rest away with a scrub.

Pressure washing can also work, but you should avoid rinsing it into a storm drain or gutter as storm drains don’t treat water flowing through them, which means the oil ends up in local streams.

Driveway and Snow and Ice
If at all possible you should avoid using de-icers on your driveway since they contain chemical such as ammonium nitrates and ammonium sulphates that attack concrete chemically. Rock salt  does less damage but still poses a risk to vegetation, so be wary of that.

Use Sand for New Driveways Instead of Rock Salt or De-icers
Also, keep in mind that new driveways are particularly susceptible to salt erosion. In those cases sand is another way you can get traction.
